Lord Jehovah (Lord GOD= in the KJV)
Adonay Jehovah R= 11; 305 uses; 295 verses
The translation of this particular phrase, Adonay<= /i> Jehovah, illustrates the very difficult position the translators of the King James Version of the Bible placed themselves in by endeavoring to adhere to the rabbinical tradition of using the word Lord in place of God’s title Jehovah. On the one hand, they did not want to translate this phrase as “Lord LORD” because of the embarrassing redundancy th= at would have been repeated 293 times. On the other hand if they had translated this Hebrew phrase “Lord Jehovah” the whole plan of using LORD = in place of the tetragram would have fallen to pieces. Hence, the KJV translat= ors attempted to extricate themselves from their man-made predicament by render= ing the tetragram as “GOD” in all capitals. To a great extent this solution changes the meaning of 287 verses of scripture significantly. Only those paying careful attention to the capitalization code will come to the intended sense of these scriptures.
E.W. Bullinger in Appendix 32 of his Companion= Bible lists 134 verses where the ancient guardians of the Hebrew Old Testament, t= he Sopherim, altered the Hebrew text to read Adonay rather than Jeho= vah. According to Bullinger the Sopherim listed these alterations in the Hebrew = text they were responsible for called the Massorah. The one alteration noted bel= ow may have been returned to the original Hebrew in modern critical Hebrew tex= ts. This sense of reverence that the scripture itself never instructs persisted, then, in Jewish and Christian scholarship since at least the Middle Ages.= p>
