As the Old Testament phrase in the sight of God begins with a condescensio: in the eyes of God= , so this Old Testament phrase begins with the face of Jehovah. However, = the figure is often translated according to the meaning of the figure as in = the presence of Jehovah, or before Jehovah. Because paniym Jehovah is sometimes translated in the same way as ayin, 5869: in the sight of the LORD (Psalm 19:14), and because recognizing the emphasis of each figure of speech can be critical to rightly dividing t= he truth in the New Testament Greek is can be important to check which Hebrew = word is used.

The emphasis of the face of the LORD or the presence of the LORD is communication with God. When the consequences of sin are in the context, the presence of God is mentioned because divine communication or action on the matter is imminent. A believer may come before God to communicate in prayer. The translation of I Kings 13:6 really shows the= intended force of this figure in the Bible:

And the king answe= red and said unto the man of God, Intreat now the f= ace of the LORD thy God, and pray for me, that my hand may be restored me again. A= nd the man of God besought the LORD, and the king's hand was restored him agai= n, and became as it was before.

The emphasis of in the eyes of the LORD is Jehovah's view of a thing, whether He communicates this view or not. In Lamentations 2:19 the Hebrew t= ext incorrectly reads “in the face of the lord (adonay)”. =

A number of similar errors were introduced by the Sopherim during the Middle Ages out of an unscriptura= l, reverence for the name Jehovah.= The Sopherim, however, endeavored to keep a record of the= se changes for posterity.
