Lord in the Hebrew Old Testament: Adown and Adownai
Adown, Strong’s number 113, is used
335 times in the Hebrew Old Testament. Translated lord, master, sir, and owner, adown is from an
unused Hebrew root that meant “to rule.” Kings, fathers, husbands,
angels, and messengers from God are all referred to in the Old Testament as lords with the Hebrew word adown. In the King James Version of the
Bible, adown as lord is generally printed with a lower case l.
Adownai, Strong’s number 136, is based
on a figurative usage of the plural form of adown.
When this plural form is connected to a singular subject, this heterosis is
called the plural intensive. When this plural intensive refers to God, it is
given a special pronunciation represented as Adownai in Strong’s concordance, number 136.
There are,
however, many exceptions in the use of the plural intensive of adown for God alone. Of course the
Hebrew plural is used of men when
more than one lord is referenced (marked 1pl
below). However, in Gen 42:30 & 33, for instance, Joseph’s brothers
refer to Joseph not as the adown of
the land, but with the Hebrew plural intensive, as, for a want of a better mode
of expression, its adownai or supreme
lord. In Genesis 45:8 Joseph refers to himself as “adownai of Pharaoh’s household.” Since the plural
intensive when used of man was not vowel pointed by the Sopherim, it is
technically a different word. Supreme-lord was a word pronounced differently
when used of God. In English we would at least distinguish between Pharaoh as
the supreme lord of
Although Joseph
had concealed his true identity, his brothers understood his position of
authority in
Likewise, the
first occurrence of adownai, Gen
39:20, in reference to a man is of Potiphor, the Egyptian who bought, redeemed,
Joeseph from slavery. Hence, God’s word does not set out a mystical or solely
spiritual meaning for adownai. This
intensive word for lord indicates a
master who has the power of life or of death over his servant, a master who has
legal ownership of his servant, and a master who is a lord over others who excursive
authority
This final
qualification for one to be called adownai,
that a ruler excursuses authority over other rulers, means that the head of any
household could be considered a lord of lords. Each member of a household has a
specific area of responsibility over which he or she holds sway. The
household’s master or steward, or concierge, is the lord over all (his
house). These exceptions in the use of addownai
for God alone are easily understood based on the meaning of the Hebrew plural intensive
and are marked with “1” for reference.
Linguistically,
it is important to note that in Gen 43:20; 44:5, 7-9, 18 -20 and 22, when
Joeseph’s brethren speak to him directly, they refer to him as adown, without the plural intensive.
They are not addressing him according to his full authority. They address him
according to his immediate authority over them. The plural intensive form of
lord, adownai, occurs much less frequently with pronouns involving direct
address or with first person singular or plural pronouns (my, our). Hence, there
are a number of exceptions in which adown,
rather than adownai, is used of
Jehovah God. These exceptional uses are also marked below with “2”
for reference.
The first sub-category
of this second type of exception is related to the supreme quality of
God’s dominion. For instance, God is “lord, adown, of all the earth.” There are six instances of the
phrase “the Lord (adown—
singular) of the whole earth” in the Old Testament. These have been
marked with “2a.” There are also two examples of the phrase the
“Lord (adown113) of lords.”
Each use the Strong’s categorized adown,
#113, but are actually uses of the plural intensive heterosis of lord more
closely related to Adownai, Strong’s #136. These uses, that could be translated
as “the supreme lord of lords,” have been marked with “2b.”
One example of Lord of Kings has also
been noted 2b. This is an important use because as it relates to New
Testament studies. This use in Daniel equates the Aramaic mare to the Hebrew adown113.
When God refers
to Himself as master, or adown, in
accordance with the covenant of Moses, these verses are marked “2c.”
When those under the covenant addressed God directly they used either addownai or adown. Addownai is often
used to address God in intercessory prayer or according to His full glory known
to all the earth. On the other hand, adown
is used in reference to God as Jehovah or master according to the promises of

The Sopherim
and Systems for Transmitting the Bible
The
Sopherim, the medieval scribes associated with the Hebrew text, in 134 places,
changed the original Hebrew word Jehovah to Adownai. These are listed in E.W.
Bullinger’s Companion Bible, appendix 32. Those uses of Lord
have been noted below as: “Sopherim – Jehovah.” The Sopherim
were meticulous about textual transmission. If they were conscious, to a fault,
of the sacred quality of God’s presence through belief in His name, they,
nevertheless, handled the words of the Creator with the fear and reverence
which is right. The system of marginal notation that involved counting each and
every character copied down to the jots and tittles is beyond compare in
Medieval Times. When they did replace, for whatever reasons, the name of God
with adownai, they noted each replacement with a marginal note. This is also
the first recorded system of replacement of the Divine Name beyond historical
dispute. Is it possible there were once other systems that involved the
replacement of the Divine name in the Septuagint as early as the second or
third centuries? The answer is “yes,” it is at least possible.
These two web pages, Yahweh's name in the Dead Sea Scrolls
(http://www.eliyah.com/yhwhdss.html) and Tetragrammaton Found in
Earliest Copies of the Septuagint (http://www.eliyah.com/lxx.html) each
show the abbreviation for the tetragrammaton given in a formal ancient Hebrew
script right in the midst of the Greek translation of Psalms and the
"minor" prophets. Phillip Comfort on
page 209 of Encountering the
Manuscripts: An Introduction to New Testament Paleography gives an
impressive account of the plausible development of a system in which KY with a bar was used to specifically
replace Jehovah in the Greek translation of the Old Testament Hebrew.
Whenever man
comes up with any system, it will be fallible. For instance, when the King
James Version translates Jehovah as LORD, it uses all capital letters. When
the King James Version translates adownai
as Lord, it capitalizes the L. While this is an absolutely
unnecessary system, it is also very fallible. In a number of places, the King
James Version translators put themselves in a dilemma from which they
apparently had little recourse. Their use of LORD in place of Jehovah in the Hebrew text meant that
when God’s word used Adownai
Jehovah, Lord Jehovah, the King James Translators had a problem. They could
have translated this phrase as Lord LORD, but this would have been
embarrassingly redundant. They chose instead to translate this as Lord GOD. The
use of all capitals for God is the
signal to a careful reader that Adownai
Jehovah (Old
Testament phrase 23) is in the original Hebrew. Most casual readers of the
Bible have no idea what the logic of this special system of capitalizations
mean. These have also been clarified below.
Although, there
are a number of spellings for adownai
with vowel points indicating a divine reference, it is important to remember
that the vowel points were added during the Middle Ages and are not
of Divine authority. For instance, in Deut. 10:17 while Strong’s Concordance does not categorize this use of lord as adownai, the King James translators used a capital L, generally reserved for translations
of adownai. Lord is Strong’s number 113, adown, but it is in the Hebrew plural intensive (also called pluralis majestatis). Because this title is descriptive of God, but does not
name Him, the vowels are not, perhaps, pointed to indicate adownai. The meaning of the Hebrew plural intensive did not change,
only its referent. Hence, the plural construction of lord with a singular reference will always be called adownai, but those uses seemingly not
vowel pointed as Adownai, or not
recognized by Strong’s as such, will
be labeled adownai113. Our Heavenly
Father’s words were designed to make complete sense from themselves
without vowel points.
Likewise, the
Hebrew oral translations or interpretations of the Old Testament, the targums,
are not
of Divine authority. These were committed to writing from times as early as the
fifth century through the Middle Ages, and because we have so little
information available about the methods and principles that guided each Aramaic
paraphrase, the evidence from readings of the patristic documents are of more
authority for New Testament study than the Targums are for the Old Testament.
The targums, though, were not at all backwards about using abbreviations for
Jehovah or in putting the tetragram itself into the Aramaic scripts. Hence,
since the targums may be interpreting texts no longer available to us today, when
they have Jehovah in place of adownai,
this is noted below with Targ. = Jah.
Whenever and
wherever man has failed, the story of God’s word is His success on our
behalf; so also with the transmission of the text of the Holy Bible. The
Heavenly Father in His foreknowledge has magnified His word above all of His
name. He has purified the words of men, the words of earth “seven
times.” His word lives and abides forever. Because God is no respecter of
persons, when we approach His word with believing, we can receive all His
perfection with the clarity of any of the ancients. By allowing God’s
word to speak for itself, by believing that His word of truth is perfect and
can in no way contradict itself, by searching for His divine markings in
figures of speech and in His ancient idioms, the barriers of man’s
failures in the transmission of the ancient texts fall away. That is the
purpose of this website. In the search for the accuracy of God’s word in
the uses of Jehovah, LORD, and Lord Jesus Christ, may II Timothy 2:15 be our
the password and Hebrews 11:6 our key.

Although Christ

Jer 34:5 But thou shalt die in peace: and with the
burnings of thy fathers, the former kings which were before thee, so shall they
burn odours for thee; and they will lament thee, saying, Ah lord
(adown— singular)! for I have
pronounced the word, saith the LORD (JEHOVAH).
Jer 37:20 Therefore hear now, I pray thee, O my lord
(adown— singular) the king: let my supplication, I pray thee, be accepted
before thee; that thou cause me not to return to the house of Jonathan the
scribe, lest I die there.
Jer 38:9 My lord (adown— singular) the
king, these men have done evil in all that they have done to Jeremiah the
prophet, whom they have cast into the dungeon; and he is like to die for hunger
in the place where he is: for there is no more bread in the city.

Dan 1:2 Sopherim
-- Jehovah
Dan 1:10 And
the prince of the eunuchs said unto Daniel, I fear my lord (adown— singular) the king, who
hath appointed your meat and your drink: for why should he see your faces worse
liking than the children which are of your sort? then shall ye make me endanger
my head to the king.
Daniel 2:10 The
Chaldeans answered before the king, and said, There is not a man upon the earth
that can shew the king's matter: therefore there is no king, lord
(rab—Aramaic, 7229), nor ruler
(shalliyt —Aramaic, 7990), that
asked such things at any magician, or astrologer, or Chaldean.
2b Daniel 2:47
The king answered unto Daniel, and said, Of a truth it is, that your God is a
God of gods, and a Lord (mare'—Aramaic 4756:
singular construct) of kings, and a revealer of secrets, seeing thou
couldest reveal this secret.
Daniel
4:19 ¶ Then Daniel, whose name was Belteshazzar, was astonied for one
hour, and his thoughts troubled him. The king spake, and said, Belteshazzar,
let not the dream, or the interpretation thereof, trouble thee. Belteshazzar
answered and said, My lord (mare'—Aramaic 4756: with 1st person suffix), the dream be
to them that hate thee, and the interpretation thereof to thine enemies
Daniel 4:24
This is the interpretation, O king, and this is the decree of the most High,
which is come upon my lord (mare'—Aramaic 4756: with 1st person suffix) the king
2b Daniel 5:23
But hast lifted up thyself against the Lord (mare'—Aramaic 4756: singular construct) of heaven; and they
have brought the vessels of his house before thee, and thou, and thy lords, thy
wives, and thy concubines, have drunk wine in them; and thou hast praised the
gods of silver, and gold, of brass, iron, wood, and stone, which see not, nor
hear, nor know: and the God in whose hand thy breath is, and whose are all thy
ways, hast thou not glorified:

Dan 10:16 And,
behold, one like the similitude of the sons of men touched my lips: then I
opened my mouth, and spake, and said unto him that stood before me, O my lord
(adown— singular), by the
vision my sorrows are turned upon me, and I have retained no strength.
Dan 10:17 For
how can the servant of this my lord (adown— singular) talk with this my lord (adown— singular)? for as for me,
straightway there remained no strength in me, neither is there breath left in
me.
Dan 10:19 And
said, O man greatly beloved, fear not: peace be unto thee, be strong, yea, be
strong. And when he had spoken unto me, I was strengthened, and said, Let my lord
(adown— singular) speak; for
thou hast strengthened me.
Dan 12:8 And I
heard, but I understood not: then said I, O my Lord (adown— singular), what shall be
the end of these things?
2c? Hos 12:14
Ephraim provoked him to anger most bitterly: therefore shall he leave his blood
upon him, and his reproach shall his *Lord (adownai113) return unto him.
*Surely,
this should be Adownai, not adown.
